For most of us, hospital bed sheets evoke a collective memory of a crisp white top and bottom sheet with a matching pillow case. Before the introduction of fitted sheets, bottom sheets were always folded under the mattress at the corners. In a hospital setting, the housekeeping staff would change the medical beds sheets often without moving the patient from the bed. Using what came to be known as hospital corners, the bottom sheet would be folded in a sharp, crisp pleat. Properly folded, the hospital corner method helped to keep the bottom sheet in place.
A properly fitting flat hospital bed sheet was still prone to slip out of place. A loose bed sheet is nothing more than a minor nuisance for most of us, but for a patient confined to a hospital bed, an ill fitting sheet can be far more than just a nuisance. Loose sheet can bunch up, causing pressure points under the weight of the patient. In patients confined to bed for long periods of time, pressure points can at the least be uncomfortable to being the cause of bed sores. If left unresolved, bed sores are a potential serious complication.
